Organizing a Seminar on Sustainable Development in Africa: Mauritania as a Model
The Higher Authority for Press and Audiovisual Media in Nouakchott organized a seminar titled ‘Sustainable Development in Africa: Mauritania as a Model,’ under the supervision of the President of the Higher Authority for Press and Audiovisual Media, Mr. El-Hacen Ould Meddou.
The aim of this seminar is to enhance the capabilities and skills of journalists in the fields of development and the environment.
The Executive Director of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, Mr. Ibrahima Attab, delivered a presentation on the importance of the environment and sustainable development, emphasizing that Africa possesses abundant economic resources despite the poverty of its people. He affirmed that what it lacks is the proper management of its resources and wealth.
He addressed the environmental situation in Mauritania, highlighting its strategic geographical location and mineral resources, which could contribute to the country’s development. He mentioned that climate change and desertification, when combined, lead to the elimination of most vegetation and forests, resulting in negative consequences. Additionally, the worsening pollution has had a significant impact on health.
At the end of the session, the speaker responded to the participants’ concerns related to the topic.
The seminar was attended by the advisor to the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, several parliamentary deputies, diplomats, as well as a group of journalists and individuals interested in cultural affairs.
