The Mauritanian Ministries of Environment, Sustainable Development, National Education, Technical Training and Reform have prepared a national program for environmental education related to “green schools”.
The Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Maryam Bakay, said that this program falls within the framework of implementing the National Strategy for Environment and Sustainable Development, explaining that the first phase of it (2021 and 2024) will include the establishment of a “green school” in each province, which is an experimental phase, and if successful, the project will be distributed throughout the country. She explained, in a press statement, that the program aims to change behavior towards environmental issues in their various economic and social aspects, by integrating environmental problems and the principles of sustainable development into academic programs, as well as enhancing the educational capabilities of teachers and improving the environmental framework of schools.
It also aims to develop a national network of youth clubs on the environment, in addition to establishing the Best Green School Award, starting next year, on the occasion of World Environment Day.
The Minister indicated that within the framework of implementing this program, a follow-up and supervision committee will be established, in addition to working with organizations that have experience in this field, whether local or international, in addition to experts and researchers in environmental issues, noting that preserving the environment is the path to development.
