The security file and development opportunities topped the discussions at a summit between Somalia and Djibouti, focusing on enhancing the bilateral relations between the two countries located in the African Horn.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud held talks with his Djiboutian counterpart Ismaïl Omar Guelleh on Sunday, focusing on enhancing relations in the fields of security and economic integration.

The two presidents held a joint press conference in Djibouti’s capital, where they emphasized the depth of the historical relations between the two countries and their importance.

The presidents highlighted the promotion of common interests of the two governments and finding solutions to challenges in the region, mentioning that they will cooperate in enhancing security and economic cooperation to benefit from the available development opportunities in the African Horn region.

Somali President stated, “In the African Horn, there are many opportunities and challenges.”

Sheikh Mahmoud continued, “Given that the region is strategic and important to the rest of the world, we must collectively decide how to engage with other neighboring countries, utilize our resources, and deal with all parts of the world.”

He explained that Somalia and Djibouti share history, culture, religion, and blood, which explains the continuous support from the Djiboutian government and people for the reconstruction of Somalia.

He added, “We have full confidence in the Djiboutian people and government, and that is why we always seek advice and expertise here.”

On his part, President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh thanked President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud and the accompanying delegation for their official visit to Djibouti, noting that the president’s visit is a sign of strengthening the existing relations between the two countries.
