The application of the decision to ban the use of plastic bags and other plastic packaging in Moroni, the capital of the Comoros Islands, began in January 2016, where waste collection and pollution caused by toxic waste represent a major problem.

Assistant Mayor of Moroni responsible for urban development Mustafa Shams al-Din said that environmental protection is a priority for the city, emphasizing the need to think about “the future of our children” and pointing out that as of the mentioned date, buying plastic bags in the capital of the Comoros Islands will be considered a violation of the law.

For her part, the head of the Environment Directorate in the Comoros Islands, Fatima Abdullah, mentioned the harmful effects of plastic bags on the environment and health, confirming that banning their use will represent “a major step in protecting the environment and health” and that “the financial gain for traders” is “nothing compared to the health costs resulting from the effects of pollution that can be avoided”.
